The Governor's Legal Office, under the direction of the governor's chief legal counsel, advises the governor on all matters of legal concern. Duties include giving legal recommendations on all enacted legislation that comes before the governor for signature, drafting and negotiating legislation, drafting executive orders, reviewing extraditions and pardons, and handling day-to-day legal issues. The office also serves as staff for the Governor's Statewide Anti-Crime Council, which considers and implements criminal justice policies and proposals. The post of Chief Legal Counsel is known to have existed from the term of Endicott Peabody (1963-1965) onward.
